Everything is terrible BUT…

10 things to take your mind off everything. Mainly Pop Culture with cute animals. (Sunday 31st January 2021)

  1. Watch some absolutely amazing TV. I binged It’s A Sin earlier in the week and I’ve not stopped thinking about it since. And from what I’ve read on social media, that’s been across the board. Screenwriter Russell T Davies (Doctor Who, Years and Years, A Very English Scandal) writes about a group of friends in the 80’s dealing with AIDS epidemic. It’s a tough watch at times, and yes, you will cry. (I took a break between a couple of the episodes) But it’s heartbreaking, funny, and you will fall in love with the characters and the soundtrack. It’s shown on a Friday night on Channel 4 but if you’ve missed it, you can catch up on All 4.

2. This rock that looks like Cookie Monster. Thank you to my pal Illona for sending me this! Geologists found this incredibly rare rock that looks like Cookie Monster and it’s the coolest thing ever. Read more about it here.

3. James McAvoy is doing Celebrity Bake Off which makes me incredibly excited. I literally cannot wait to see how he gets on. They haven’t announced an air date yet, but I am already counting down the days.

4. This dog and these kittens. If you want to see some extra cuteness, the video can be seen here.

5. The mysterious snow duck maker who cheered up a snowy Bath last week.

6. Saturday Night Live is back! The first episode of 2021 aired last night in the US with host John Krasinski (US version of The Office, A Quiet Place). Future hosts announced include Dan Levy and Regina King. You can watch it in the UK, either via clips in Youtube, or on the Sky Comedy Channel Sunday at 9pm. In the meantime, this is a clip featuring the late Chadwick Boseman and I’ve watched it a million times.

7. More digital theatre is on it’s way, in the form of Shook by Samuel Bailey. Shook won the Papatango prize in 2019 and tells the story of 3 young men in a young offenders’ institution who are about to become fathers for the first time. It was about to transfer to the West End before everything closed, but has now been adapted for film. Shook can be watched from 5–28th Feb, and you can find more info here.

8. Virtual chocolate tasting is a thing! I stumbled across this on twitter. It’s organised by a company called Cocoa Runners. They do virtual chocolate nights where you choose which date you want to book, then they send you a box of chocolate and a zoom link. The zoom link will lead you to a ‘tutored tasting’ where you get to learn more about chocolate and eat the ones they’ve sent you! We’ve signed up for one on Valentine’s Day, and the only thing I’m not looking forward to is keeping the chocolate until then. You can learn more about their range of chocolate and experiences here. (*Usual disclaimer, not being paid for this, I just really love chocolate. And getting fun things in the post. I’m not an influencer. How do you become a chocolate influencer tho? I would love to know…).

9. This fun picture of Gillian Anderson and Olivia Colman, taken behind the scenes of The Crown. Gillian Anderson shared on her instagram in honour of Colman’s birthday this week.

10. This way of making sure that baby goats don’t hurt each other. Cute and practical.

Okay, that’s it for another week! Stay safe, wear a mask, and remember that every day takes us closer to things being semi-normal again.
