Everything is terrible BUT…

A list of 10 things that are nice. Mainly films, theatre, and books, with the occasional Cat Lawyer. (Sunday 14th February 2021)

  1. My virtual film club watched Baby Done and I really liked it. Thanks to my pal Vicky for this one. Baby Done is the story of Zoe (Comedian Rose Matafeo) and Tim (Harry Potter’s Matthew Lewis), who face an unplanned pregnancy. Zoe freaks out as she hasn’t done everything she wanted to do yet, so makes a list of things that she wants them to do before the baby arrives. Baby Done is funny, sweet, and charming and can be rented from Amazon, Sky Store, or other streaming providers.

2. Emilia is back! Emilia is a brilliant play that I was lucky enough to see a couple of years ago and was overjoyed when it was released online last year. It’s now back to watch from 1st-31st March. It’s written by playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm, and is about the life of poet Emilia Bassano – who was rumoured to be a muse of Shakespeare. Even if Shakespeare isn’t your thing, don’t worry – this play is rousing, powerful, and passionate – and brilliantly played by an all female cast. Tickets are pay what you can, starting at £1. You can find out more info here.

3. This farmer named his new lambs after the Spice Girls and this tickles me.

4. I’ve started reading Sayaka Murata’s new book, Earthlings. As well as having the cutest cover ever, I really enjoyed Murata’s last book, Convenience Store Woman. So far, it’s a very dark tale about a young girl trying to put a traumatic childhood behind her. But she has a close relationship with her cousin, who believes he is an alien from another planet. Looking forward to seeing where this book takes me.

5. There is more than one Big Bird in existence and it differs depending where in the world you watch Sesame Street. Do visit this thread to find out more.

6. While we’re talking about puppets…Michelle Obama has a show coming to Netflix. Waffles + Mochi will see her travel the globe with two puppets, tasting different foods and meeting pals such as Tan France, Jack Black, Rashida Jones and many more. I’m probably a hundred years too old for its target audience, but given the past pandemic year, the idea of travelling the globe in a magic handcart with Michelle Obama, eating nice foods, and meeting her celebrity pals, is very appealing. Waffles + Mochi comes to Netflix on March 16th.

7. And while we’re talking about Netflix…The Umbrella Academy is back in production, yay! Emmy Raver who plays Allison posted this on her instagram earlier this week. Given that You-Know-What caused many TV shows to stop filming, this is very good news indeed.

8. If you’re looking for a film on Valentines Day, or just want something fun, I can recommend The Broken Hearts Gallery. I managed to catch it when UK Cinemas were briefly open last year. After being dumped, Lucy (Geraldine Viswanathan from Blockers, Bad Education), decides to open a gallery of the items left behind from ex-partners. She meets Nick, (Dacre Montgomery from Stranger Things) who is nursing past heartbreak of his own. This is completely frothy and fun, and sheer escapism. Out now on streaming.

9. The Office. (US version) Along with Schitt’s Creek, apparently The Office is among the comfort telly that people have been mostly rewatching during this time. I’m watching it from the start and I have to confess – this is my first watch of it! I know! Years behind everyone else. Madness that I’ve left it so long. In the UK, you can watch it on Sky Comedy, or on Amazon Prime.

10. “I’m not a cat”. I mean, it’s everyone’s worst nightmare, right? Making some faux pas on Zoom. You’ve probably read by now about the Lawyer who had to explain to a judge that he was a human, and not a cat. This will never not be funny.

That’s it for another week! Look after yourself and take care! x
